San Luis Obispo

Sometimes referred to as "little Santa Barbara," San Luis Obispo is tucked into the mountains halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. It's surrounded by green, pristine mountain ranges and filled with a mix of college kids attending California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly for short), big-city transplants, and agricultural folk.

The town grew up around an 18th-century mission, and its dozens of historic landmarks, Victorian homes, shops, and restaurants are its primary attractions for visitors. Today it's still quaint, almost undiscovered. It also makes a good base for exploration of the region as a whole. To the west of town, a short drive away, are some of the state's prettiest swimming beaches; to the north and south you'll find the Central Coast's wine country, home to dozens of respectable wineries and bucolic scenery.

Simply called "SLO" or "San Luis" by locals, the city is the cultural and commercial hub of California's scenic Central Coast. It's anchored by one of California's historic missions, Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, one of the best-preserved examples of 18th century Spanish architecture. SLO has long been recognized as one of the best stops for trips between Los Angeles (200 miles south) and San Francisco (230 miles north).

Endless acres of picturesque vineyards located only minutes from downtown supports a thriving wine industry. Natives celebrate seasonal harvests with world-class wines and innovative, cosmopolitan-inspired cuisine.

Living within a bountiful natural environment for recreation and pleasure, enjoying a culture brimming with art and social activity, and slowing down to enjoy the good life is the essence of San Luis Obispo.
